Klaang, of the yet unknown Klingon race, crashes on Earth. This prompts Starfleet to launch the new Enterprise NX-01, their first starship capable of warp 5, ahead of schedule to take him home. This is against the advisement of the Vulcans who have seemingly been hindering Earth's warp drive progress, and thus their entry into deep space exploration.

On the way to Kronos, the Enterprise encounters the Suliban. They want to stop the Klingon from reaching his homeworld with information of their conspiracy to send the Klingon Empire into civil war via help from the future by an unknown (but likely Romulan) alien.
